4 Tips For Staying Healthy Through The Holidays

The holidays are a great time to bring family and friends together. They also bring lots of opportunities for eating and drinking. Are you worried about gaining weight or falling off your healthy wagon this holiday season? I believe balance is key to maintaining through parties and events throughout December.

Here are four of my favorite tips to help you stay healthy through the holidays:

Exercise early. Moving your body first thing in the morning sets your mood for the day and helps your body combat stress during this insanely busy season. A quick, 15-20 min toning routine ( I prefer a freestyle yoga flow to music I love), or a walk can have a huge impact on your energy levels for the day. Plus, getting your workout done and out of the way in the morning ensures you won't have to feel guilty about anything you treat yourself to later.

Be mindful when you eat. We all know how easy it is to snack on treats this time of year, but a cookie here and a cupcake there can turn into a full on binge. Meals shouldn't be a source of anxiety or end with regret. If you're going to indulge, do so mindfully. Chew each bite slowly. Pay close attention to the textures, tastes, smells, and the entire experience of what you're eating. If you do, you'll probably find yourself satisfied after only a few bites instead of stuffing yourself to the point of disgust.

Get creative with traditional holiday recipes. It's a lot easier than you may think to make healthy swaps for traditional ingredients when baking. Consider using coconut oil instead of butter, natural sugars(coconut) or stevia instead of sugar, and flour alternatives such as quinoa or almond flour.

Watch what you drink. I LOVE me some cocktails during holiday parties, but most contain calories that add up fast.  If you like beer go for light. Craving a cocktail? Clear liquors like Vodka mixed with Sugar Free Red Bull or Diet Coke are lighter options. Better yet - have something on the rocks. There are so many flavored vodkas to choose from these days that taste delicious over ice.

Still craving a decadent cocktail?  Cut your alcohol calories in half by alternating water or seltzer between higher calorie alcoholic beverages.
